September 6-11 :: English Retreat

Updated September 5: For shuttles from the airport (SAN) to Deer Park on Tuesday, Sept 5 (until 3pm), please go to Terminal 1 (Southwest/United) at the foot of the Sky Bridge escalators (by the baggage claim), to meet with fellow retreatants and share shuttles to Deer Park.

For shuttle rides from Deer Park back to San Diego airport, they will be arranged during the retreat: you will not have to worry about your return journey.  A sign-up list will be available in the tea room for you to request a shuttle (the times start at 8am and go all the way to 3pm – these are departure times from Deer Park).  Earlier and later shuttles can be arranged if there is a need for them.   We ask that if you sign up for a shuttle at a particular time, you take that shuttle at that time.  Each shuttle ride will cost between $50 (in the unlikely case that only one person is riding at that time) and $15 (if the van is full with 10 riders) per person (+ tip).   We wish you a safe and happy journey to Deer Park and look forward to a wonderful retreat with you.

      Dear Abha, I would suggest taking the 5 freeway south to Oceanside, get on the 78 East towards Escondido and exit Broadway. The other way through Riverside is just so congested (91/15/215 freeways) and expensive on gas.

    How complex is the public transit connection from the San Diego Airport to the monastery? Is there other transportation available? I would be flying in from Hawai’i and have to make suitable connections dependent upon arrival and departure times. How much cushion is there for arrival and departure from the monastery?

      I think it’s a bit complex, but totally doable. The public transit option would require four different services (bus to train to light rail to taxi). It might be easier to find a group to share a airport shuttle. If you choose the public transit option, you take the Coaster up to Oceanside and then the light rail to Escondido. I hope this helps.

      Retreat participants are strongly encouraged to arrive by dinner on arrival day and depart after lunch on departure day.

        Yes, public transit is doable and very time-consuming.  Please also consider whether you will need to schlep tents and heavy/awkward things in addition to luggage.

      Thank you. Will be at San Diego airport at 12:20pm. Supper shuttle has a $100 van for 7 people or a $58 for first person and $9 for each additional (upto 10). PLease respond for anyone intersted in sharing a van.

          Since our flight times are quite separate, as you two will arrive between 9:30 and 10:30am, while I arrive at 1:35pm, it looks like it would be less stress for you to go on without me and for me to go with the other people down below, that way you wouldn’t have to wait so long for me to arrive.  I am not sure how this will all turn out but I hope for the best!

We can reserve our own shuttle for round-trip (about $100 +tip each way; so if we have 3, 4, 5 riders then the coast would about $40-50 each round trip or less with more riders).

     I know this is a 6 day retreat and that partial stays are either not permitted or frowned upon normally.  Am I correct that just attending Sept 11 would not be an option?  I can’t do 6 days due to work, and would LOVE to attend on my birthday (9/11).  I can’t think of a more appropriate way to spend my birthday!  Just curious.

      The last day of the retreat is a Sunday and typically this is a day when people come to the monastery. Though it isn’t necessarily encouraged, due to the large number of people, we are open to the public on September 11.

            I am open about who drives. If I drive I’d love to have you share driving. I have a compact automatic. And yes share costs and keeping driver awake is good.
            Should be in Deer Park between 1pm and 5pm on Tuesday so will have to leave very early Tuesday morning – I’m guessing 3 or 4am.

      We just completed our Family Retreat for 2011. For the past 6-7 years, Deer Park monastery has held the retreat the week leading up to July 4.

            I thought I was on a shuttle with a group only to be told later that it was full.  If I don’t find something with somebody soon…I will book my own shuttle.  There is a group leaving at 1:00 PM…it seemed a little long to have to wait for me since I get in around 11:00.  Check messages further down…Lotusforyou has booked a van that leaves at 1:00 PM

            I am driving a small car.  I didn’t have luck with joining a van at the time that I wanted so I rented a car.  If you don’t have much luggage I can probably take you.  I already have one other passenger wanting a ride.  We got an e-mail that there will be greeters and vans running periodically from the airport to Deer Park if that would suit you better.  I plan on leaving around 11:30 or so.  Thanks…Scootie

    i am registered for the sept 6-11 retreat at deer park, and have been invited to lead a silent multifaith “bells of compassion” meditative peace procession at home in santa cruz, ca in late afternoon of sept 11. i remember 2 years ago there were a few folks needing to leave on a very early shuttle the last day of the retreat. the least expensive flight leaves airport at 10:25 am…or there is another at 12:40pm (which feels a little tight timewise). do you think sharing a shuttle to arrive at airport as early as 8:30 or 9am is a reasonable possibility? and do you know how much the shuttle costs?? thanks for any info, insight, advice you may have to offer…  annie kelley

      what shuttle company did you use that travels to deer park?

        I am using the Super Shuttle.  The van is prepaid and reserved at $93 each way.  The process at the airport is to go to the baggage claim at the airport and call to have Super Shuttle send the van.    My friend gets in at 11am, but we can be flexible about when we call for the van.  I am hoping we find 5 riders to share the costs.  On the return, the van is picking us up at 10:40 on the 11th because of my friend’s flight time out of San Diego.

      Hi Victoria,
      From the Deer Park Monastery website they had some transportation options.  Two of them were airport shuttles which I think take you from door to door.  The one company was EZride and the other one Sea Breeze.  For one person they cost $53.00+, but adding another person in your party increases it by $9.00 which would make the overall price for each person less.  Hope this helps.

    For those of you arriving at the San Diego airport this
    coming Tuesday, Pete Kuhn (True Ocean of Joy) has again arranged for greeters to
    be at terminal one (South West/United) to welcome us. This way we can get into
    groups of 5-7 (or up to 10) and get collective shuttles to Deer
    Park.

    The greeters will be at Terminal 1, from 10am to 3pm, by
    the baggage claim, at the foot of the Sky Bridge, where there are escalators to an
    overpass that takes you to the shuttles. If you are arriving at the commuter
    terminal or to Terminal 2, please take the airport bus to terminal 1 if you wish
    to meet the Sangha and ride with others.

    We shall also be arranging collective shuttles on
    departure day (Sept 11) for which people will be able to sign up during the
    retreat at the tea room.

    We suggest that you bring with you the driving
    directions to Deer
    Park because some shuttle drivres have had some
    difficulties with it.

We are simply greeting folks and helping them share commercial shuttles together to lower our carbon footprint, save precious resources and build brotherhood and sisterhood. Retreat staff and monastics are not involved in this. Shuttles charge approximately $50 for the first passenger and $9 per each additional going to the same destination.”

        thanks john. i did read that post, and wrote to ask them whether i should keep my existing reservation or cancel it and start from scratch at the airport. i haven’t gotten any answer yet. do you know what shuttle company they’ll be using??

          I assume that they’ll use “Super Shuttle” but I’m not totally certain.

          I have no idea as to the appropriate wisdom in keeping your reservation or not.

    sept 6 shuttle update…i have reserved an EZ-Ride shuttle from the airport to deer park. my plane arrives at 1:35pm. if there are others who would like to share the shuttle ride on my reservation, the price per person can be lower. [ for me alone is $59, but 2 people would each pay only $34, and 5 people would each pay only about $15.50...more folks and the price keeps going down.]

    anybody want to to join my group? we can wait awhile to leave if your plane comes a little later…
