For those traveling on small funds in western Washington, USA and also Portland Oregon, USA there is a handy guide to using the public transit system to connect city or county buses to reach Vancouver within a day (though it does take a full week day). Here’s the link:

    http://zinelibrary.info/how-public-transit-vancouver-bc-portland-or

There are also updates as of a year ago (Feb 2010), but it is best to check up on the times and prices yourself when August begins coming up.

I’ve taken this route many times and know it to be valid. There are also alternative routes along the Olympic Peninsula. Stops include: Portland Or, Vancouver Wa, Longview Wa, Olympia Wa, Tacoma, Seattle, Everett Wa, Mount Vernon Wa, Bellingham Wa, Blaine Wa & White Rock Bc~ The Peninsula route includes Aberdeen Wa, Amanda Park Wa, Forks Wa, Port Angeles Wa, Sequim Wa, Port Townsend Wa, and Oak Harbor Wa.

    Good luck All!

I am looking for a ride to the Vancouver retreat from Silverton, Oregon, which is just off of I-5 by Salem. I will help drive and share fuel expenses. I can also meet you right on I-5 if 20 minutes off of freeway is too far. Thank you so much for considering me. MJ

    Can anyone help me out?

  • Pgecco

I am a Vietnam veteran on disability who has been studying Buddhism the past two years and am seeking information on any scholarship funds available for the program. Thank you.

  • Dzung Vo

Dear Friends, the retreat is now full. The registration team is creating a waitlist. Please email tnhvancouver2011.org if you would like to be on the waitlist. The registration team will notify people if and when additional spaces become available.

There are still tickets available for the August 14 public talk in Vancouver. More information is available here:

    http://www.tnhvancouver2011.org/talk

  • Jeaniesewardmagee@yahoo.com

Dear Friends, The retreat is now FULL with NO wait list space. Tickets for the Public Talk still available there have been nearly 1,000 sold so far. Please mindfully go to our website http://www.tnhvancouver2011.org for more information.

  • Terry Harding

The retreat is now full. We sent our registration in end of Jan. with payment. Do we assume we are registered so we can book off work? As yet have not recieved confirmation.I am confused as we were very early to register anyone else wondering the same ?

    • http://kenleyneufeld.com Kenley Neufeld

Yes, the retreat is full and some (if not all) the notifications have been sent out. I have forwarded your request for more information to the registrar.

      • Terry Harding

Thank you for your help and fast reply. We registered under my husbands name Paul Harding. Our letter was recieved (tracking) on Feb.25 including a money order. At that time there were spaces left so I am hoping we are going!! I am putting out a few emails and phone messages to cover all avenues (laughter).

  • Karenharrison

For the people who would still like to go, we should organize a larger Thich Nhat Hanh retreat close to the campus with senior students of Thay available. With the ability of the internet, I am sure that the dharma talks can be broadcast. Remember our hearts can be more open to accommodating more people. Since I have been practicing now for over 25 years , I am happy to help with this.

In the 80′s we held spontaneous peace camps to accommodate people easily. Have we lost our skillfulness?

    • Dzung Vo

Depending on technical availability, I believe that the sangha is hoping to live stream Thay’s talks from the Vancouver retreat.  If this is possible, the stream will be posted at Thich Nhat Hanh’s page on Facebook.

I am attending and have my confirmation email. I am getting ready to make my flight reservations for the trip. I understand the retreat begins at 2 PM on August 8 and runs through 2 PM on August 13. Is this correct? Depending on the available flights, I’d either arrive the evening before or the morning of August 8. I’d also be interested in ride sharing to/from the airport. Any response would be wonderful.

    • http://kenleyneufeld.com Kenley Neufeld

Typically the retreats begin with registration in the afternoon and end after lunch on the final day. The times are approximate, but should be accurate.

    • Wness

If I dont find a shared ride from Alberta I will be flying also and would be interested in ride sharing to and from the airport.  wness@ualberta.ca

  • Christine Lautsch

I am travelling from Ladysmith, Vancouver Island for the retreat. Is anyone available to ride share?
    Thanks. Christine.

    • Elizabeth

      Hi Christine -
I’m in Nanaimo (downtown) and will be driving with my 12 year old son to the retreat on the Monday. We would have room for one person. Apparently it begins at 2pm (registration, I guess). My son Max will need to practice piano in the morning since he will be doing his grade 6 piano exam in Vancouver on that monday at 4:20pm. We’ll leave after that. Perhaps the 10 or 12 pm ferry? I haven’t checked schedules. 250-753-2001 Elizabeth

  • Elizabeth

Would my 12 year old son have access to a decent (in tune) piano in the early afternoon? He will be doing his grade 6 piano exam at 4:20pm on Monday, August the 8th at the Masonic Centre. He’ll need to warm up. We are driving from Nanaimo. Is there one at Vanier? Do I need to get in touch with someone at the music department at UBC? Thanks, Elizabeth

    • Rayne

Hi Elizabeth, I work at the UBC School of Music and can confirm there are practice rooms at Vanier; however, those pianos may not be regularly tuned. To discuss use of the private practice rooms at the School of Music, please email me at music.advisor@ubc.ca Best wishes, Rayne

  • Nataltica

Just curious, where are people sleeping the night of the 13th if they are going to the public talk on the 14th?  Can we stay at UBC another night?

    • Dzung Vo

      Dear Nataltica,
There are some accomodations listed at the Retreat/Public Talk website FAQ page:
       http://www.tnhvancouver2011.org/faq
In addition, there are many nice small Bed-and-Breakfasts in town. Vancouver is very accessible by public transportation, so anywhere in downtown or along a transit corridor (example Cambie Street for direct light rail to the Orpheum, Broadway for one bus + light rail, or 4th Ave for bus + light rail) should work. I do not believe it is possible to stay at UBC an extra night. Metta, Dzung.

  • Susan B.

I am flying into Seatac (Seattle airport) and plan to take a train or bus to the University of British Columbia from there.  However, if someone is driving up from Seattle, wants gas money, and has an extra seat, I would love to ride with you!   I haven’t booked my flight yet so I could select it based on your plans to depart Seattle.  In fact, I am willing to purchase all the gasoline if you are driving your vehicle.  Thanks, Susan

    • Olivia B.

Hi Susan.  I live in Seattle and will be driving up to Vancouver on August 8, probably around 11am-noon since check-in is at 3pm.  I live pretty close to the airport so I can even pick you up from there.  Please contact me at oliviajasmin@comcast.net.  I can bring 3 people in my car, so if anyone else needs a ride from Seattle, feel free to email me.  Also, I am leaving August 13, when the retreat ends and not staying for the public talk on the 14th.  Thanks, Olivia B.

      • Kathleen

        HI Olivia -
I’m wondering if you have room in your car on the return drive to Seattle on Aug. 13th.  A sangha sister and I are trying to figure out how to get home to Portland, OR  from Vancouver (we both have rides there on Aug. 8th).  If we can find a ride to Seattle, we can easily take the train to Portland.  We would, of course, be happy to share gas expenses and possibly help drive as well. Thanks!
        Kathleen

      • Susan B.

Hi Olivia,  I just now saw your reply.  I already have an Amtrak ticket for Seattle to Vancouver, but I would love a ride back August 13.
I will email you my current plans.  Thanks so much, Susan B.

  • Maddie

Is this retreat full?  I am sincerely interested in a single registration.

    • http://kenleyneufeld.com Kenley Neufeld

Yes, the retreat is full. However, there should still be some tickets remaining for the Public Talk in Vancouver right after the retreat.

  • Dzung Vo

Dear Friends, the Volunteer Committee is still looking for people who would like to help with some areas of the retreat.  They would be grateful for people who could help with setup (Aug 6 to the morning of Aug 8); and also help with the Parallax Press Bookstore on August 8 – 13 (up to a few hours per day)

If you are interested in joyful work with the sangha, and available, please email: volunteertnh2011@gmail.com

  • Nataltica

Hi all!  Anyone leaving from Victoria and have an extra seat in their car?  Will help with ferry and gas money.

    Namaste,

    • Lynne

      Hi Natalica,

I’m also travelling from Victoria and looking to join a carpool. If you’ve found a car with extra room, can you please let me know?  Thanks! Lynne

      • Nataltica

So far no luck on my end finding a ride from Victoria.  If I do, I will ask for an extra seat for you Lynne :)

  • Lisabehappy1

Is anyone staying for the public talk on Sunday and driving back to the Seattle area either that evening or the next day?  Looking for space for 2 people if you have the room.   Thanks.  Lisa

  • Bonnie

Hi,  Is anyone going to downtown Vancouver after the retreat (about noon)?  I would like a ride and will
    give gas money.
    Thanks,  Bonnie

    • Dzung Vo

@ Bonnie – If you are unable to find a ride to downtown Vancouver on Aug 13, please be assured that public transportation in Vancouver is quite good.  Google Maps (“Get Directions” feature) is quite reliable for transit directions.  I think from UBC to most places in downtown, it would be either 2 bus lines, or 1 bus and 1 transfer to the Canada Line (light rail/subway system).

  • Bonnie

Hi,  I need a ride to downtown Vancouver at the end of the retreat after lunch on Aug.13th?  Will help pay for gas.
Bonnie  (I didn’t put date in last post.)

  • Paul

I will be attending the retreat and travelling from Boise, Idaho. If there is someone who might be travelling through the area to the retreat I would be pleased to share driving & expenses. If anyone is inclined to think that this might work for them, please let me know. gratefully

Looking for out of town person who, like me, is accepted as a commuter and thus needs an off caampus room. Rooms I find are quite expensive for my income (retired) so would like to find someone to share room. I am 60′s male. I will have a car. Rowan. Conradrw@aol.com

  • Yvonne Young

Is anyone attending this retreat driving back to Eugene afterwards?  I’d be happy to share gas.

  • Dzung Vo

A deep bow of gratitude to everyone who has contacted the volunteer coordinator and offered to work with the sangha to present this event.  At this time, we have enough volunteers to mindfully complete the tasks needed, so we are not collecting additional names of volunteers right now.  If there are any future updates, they will be posted here.

  • Kpcoster

I will be driving from Duncan, Vancouver Island on the morning of the 8th and have room for one passenger.  Will probably be going via Nanaimo.  Let me know if you want a ride.

    • Jdp_ads2008

Hi there, my daughter and I are from Nanaimo, also going to the retreat.  You only have room for one other person?

      • Kpcoster

Hi, I have room for two going to Vancouver but only room for one on the return.

        • Jdp_ads2008

Hi, that would be fine.  May I ask about the cost?  You can send me email via jdp_ads2008@yahoo.ca.  Thanks.

          • Kpcoster

Many apologies but have changed my plans and will be going with someone else via Schwartz Bay.

          • Nataltica

Hi there Kpcoster, do you have room for one more person? I could meet you at Schwartz Bay?

          • Kpcoster

Sorry, Nataltica, not my car and we are carrying extra ‘stuff’ and are full on the way back.  good luck tho.

          • Dee

            Hi,

I would be pleased of someone could provide a link to the exact building or meeting point in UBC
for the retreat on August 8th. Thank you

    • http://kenleyneufeld.com Kenley Neufeld

The talks and meditation will take place in the War Memorial Gym, but your registration confirmation should specify where to meet to register.

    • BF

Here is a map of UBC.  Just put your cursor over any of the buildings to get a better idea of what is what.  The War Memorial building is close to the black arrow with the “N” in it.

      Kind regards

  • Lynne

I will be travelling to the retreat from Victoria and hope to carpool. Does anyone have extra room in their car in exchange for sharing gas, parking and ferry fees?

  • BF

I’m looking for a shared ride if there is anyone travelling from Abbotsford Aug 8th please email me at bforseth246 at gmail dot com

I would of course be happy to provide gas money.

Hello – I am taking the Amtrak from Seattle to Vancouver. Anyone else traveling on the train and traveling from Amtrak to the retreat via public transportation?

    Marie

    • Susan

Hi Marie, I am taking Amtrak from Seattle to Vancouver and will arrive on Monday Aug. 8 at 11:40am.  I am still considering a taxi at this point because the train plus the bus sounds complicated and time-consuming.  However, if you have more information on public transportation and are taking it and we are getting to Vancouver around the same time, perhaps we could negotiate the bus system together?  Susan

  • Janvier Slick

  • Donna

Hi Sandy. Contact me at dmmck@@telus:disqus.net and we’ll arrange to talk. I have not yet decided whether to take my car or use the Island Link or invent something else but for sure, I’ll be returning to Comox on August 13 and we could travel together one way or another….

    • Sandy

      Hi Donna,

Thanks for your reply and I checked the return times for Island link on the Saturday which is
connecting with the 12:50 ferry from horseshoe bay or the 5:20 ferry so it just depends if:
cutting the lunch and leaving by 11 a.m. or staying and putting in time until the later ferry.
      Thoughts?

I have booked the island link for August 7th as I have a commitment in the city on the Saturday.

Would anyone like to share a taxi from Vancouver ferries to UBC?  If so, please email me at nataltica@.com.

    • Nataltica

      I meant:  nataltica@hotmail.com

  • Nataltica

    Hi all,

I may have two people joining me from the Vancouver ferries to UBC via taxi.  Anyone else interested?  If we have 5 people, we can get a taxi-van.  The bus from the ferries to UBC is approx 1.5 hours and is $5.  There are at least 2 transfers.

A cab is approx $70 and split with a few people would be a nice, direct ride.

    Any takers?

If so, please email me at nataltica@hotmail.com

  • Lisa D
